Business Goes Skyewards

As more normal business practices return, Leeds office has enjoyed seeing a return of its commercial clients expanding and establishing new operations.

The Glensanda Quarry in Oban is a long-standing client who needed more sleeper units to accommodate its workforce.

Over the years, the client has taken delivery of several portable buildings from Portable Offices to accommodate its workers at the super-quarry at Glensanda – a remote and isolated Scottish peninsula.

Glensanda is an immense super-quarry which employs several hundred people and extracts around seven million tonnes of aggregate each year.

Situated off the coast of Oban, such is the remoteness of Glensanda that there is no road, rail or marked footpath links across the granite mountain, moor or heath. The only practical access is by boat from the shores of Loch Linnhe.

As a result, some of the ‘Project Highlander’ work force remain isolated for weeks at a time with few facilities or entertainment apart from fishing and wildlife. For Portable Offices, the need to provide twin sleeper units presented an opportunity to demonstrate how versatile portable accommodation could be with well-insulated cosy rooms with oil-fired radiators capable of keeping the team warm at the frequently chilly, sub-zero temperatures experienced by the island’s temporary residents.

Portable Offices also crossed the Isle of Skye Bridge to deliver two sales suites to the Talisker Brewery.

In addition, the depot has established a modular classroom together with six single classrooms at New College, Pontefract to accommodate pupils while the college is refurbished.

Manager, Becky Scholefield commented: “Storm Eunice hit during the installation and tried to hamper our efforts but undeterred, we battled on and handed over on time for the students to return after the February half term.”

Marketing suites for housebuilders continues to remain busy and an integral part of the business mix.

In addition, a gatehouse has gone to spend the summer at Temple Newsam Farm, a nearby tourist attraction on the outskirts of Leeds.

There’s also a sales suite integrated within a care home in Leeds that’s been refurbished for use as the residents’ newsagents – a new and interesting application for one of the units.

Becky continued:

“Michelle has won an order from a neighbour of ours, which is always nice, for a double stack with cedar cladding, which will look lovely and provide a wonderful showcase of our product right on our doorstep.

“We have seen a change of personnel in the yard and look forward to welcoming new operatives to the team shortly.

“With spring well and truly just around the corner, Daisy’s April wedding, which she has been excitedly planning for two years, is nearly upon us and we can’t wait to join the celebrations.”
