Modern Methods of Construction
Modern methods of construction referred to as MMC or sometimes ‘smart construction’ is a fast way of delivering new buildings, by maximising the efficiency of material and human resources. Members of the mpba have been producing smart construction for many years.
Whilst many publications bill MMC as a recent innovation, the production of volumetric buildings as a complete factory manufactured unit (a portable building) or as a module to be assembled at the final location is not new, though the methods of have been continually being improved and adapted to meet the needs of the 21st century in terms of sustainability and efficiency.
There are seven categories of MMC from pre-manufactured in a factory environment to onsite led site labour.
There are many benefits of Modern Methods of Construction that include:
- Speed. ... With pre-manufactured systems the construction time on site can be greatly reduced.
- Safety. ... With time reduced on site the risk of accident and injury can be better managed.
- Sustainability. ... Factory manufactured buildings can be built to greater tolerances.
- Quality.
- Reduced Disruption.
- Predictability.
- Better building performance and lower defects.
- Improved Social Value.
