Wernick Buildings Supply £1 million Teaching Space for Cardiff Primary

A South Wales school has gained essential teaching space thanks to a £1m extension from Wernick Buildings.

The school celebrated their new extension with an official opening, attended by the local press, representatives from Wernick and several special guests.

Four new learning spaces and group areas will transform how pupils learn at the school – and an additional nursery means the school can now offer 30-hour childcare places.

Cardiff Council chose a modular building solution, ensuring minimum disruption to pupils and time on site.

A full turnkey service from Wernick meant that groundworks were completed on-site while the buildings 18 bespoke modules were manufactured off-site.

The brick exterior and concrete tiled roof coordinate the extension with surrounding buildings, while a steel and acrylic atrium provides shelter from the elements.

  • February 19 – Modules delivered to site
  • May 19 Bank Holiday week – School completed for handover

A Welsh Government grant helped to fund the project, which Cardiff Council procured through the Fusion 21 framework.

Reducing infant class sizes is a key goal for the Welsh Government who introduced a £36m fund to help schools to meet the demand for school places.

Cllr Merry said: "During the design process, the Council worked with Oakfield Primary School to create new learning areas which have the needs and growth of the school and its community in mind. These additional spaces will help reduce infant class sizes, whilst providing excellent learning provision in a pleasant and modern environment."

Headteacher David Harris added: "I am delighted that we can officially open our new classroom space which will help ensure that we are meeting the important needs of our pupils and the growth of the school. The new building will allow all classes to have their own dedicated space within the school and ensure pupils to have access to new and enhanced educational opportunities, provided by the new accommodation. These improvements will have a significant impact on pupils, parents and staff as well as being of benefit to the local community."
