Wernick Collaboration Wins ICE Team Achievement Award
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands awarded a collaborative project, involving Wernick Buildings, the Team Achievement prize at this years East Midlands Merit Awards (the EMMAs).
Doubling Up at Wolverhampton Steel Logistics Centre required a team effort between six companies: architects William Saunders who were appointed as project manager and concept designer, Wernick Buildings who supplied a £500k modular building, contractors J F Finnegan, Street Crane Co and KGJ Price and DB Cargo – the client.
William Saunders entered the project into the awards and collected the trophy at the annual EMMA gala dinner, held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nottingham.
The project oversaw the expansion of the logistics centre to accommodate an increase in warehousing of steel coil, close to the manufacturing facilities in the West Midlands. It included the remodelling of the terminal sidings, ground remediation, a new rail connected warehouse, provision of two 40T capacity cranes, renewal of welfare and office facilities and improving vehicle movement on the tight site.
The judges commended the project team who demonstrated “extensive local operational knowledge and a flexible, but well-coordinated management approach.”
Over 200 guests and ICE members attended the dinner which was co-hosted by ex-England and Leicester Tigers rugby star Rory Underwood and Kyle Clough, Regional Director for Kier Construction and Infrastructure Services.
ICE East Midlands Regional Director Jo Barnett commented: “Our annual awards play an important role in not only demonstrating the importance of our civil engineers, whose hard work and dedication can often go unnoticed but in also celebrating the positive impact that civil engineering has on our everyday lives.”
