Wernick Building Inspires the Imagination of Newcraighall Primary Pupils
This year Wernick delivered permanent buildings to 13 different schools all over Scotland. This included a new annexe for Newcraighall Primary School in Edinburgh as part of a 5 site expansion plan for City of Edinburgh Council. The new three classroom block was due to be delivered at the beginning of October, and would provide space for up to 90 pupils.
With two weeks until the building was due to be installed, the last thing anyone on the project would have expected was a letter from the school requesting a change to the groundworks. The request they received, however, was too persuasive to be turned down.
Writing on behalf of P5, a pupil named Tilly had requested the school be able to bury a time capsule under the new annexe as part of their learning on the topic of Our Community. “Obviously we were happy to accommodate this excellent idea from the school,” commented Divisional Manager Chris Hart, “It gave us a great opportunity to involve the pupils in the project, and what was happening at their school.”
Each year group contributed one item for the future, including letters and photographs, which were buried among the buildings foundations. The timing of the capsule being buried worked perfectly, as later that morning the pupils were able to watch the 8 bays of the building being craned into position.
Before they watched the building installation, Chris spoke to the pupils about modular construction, explaining how Wernick is able to manufacture the buildings in a factory and deliver them to site, and how modular construction can mean safer and more comfortable working conditions. Pupils in P2 also wrote about seeing the installation as part of developing their personal text writing skills.
