Brief

Merton Sixth Form College ExteriorLondon Borough of Merton needed to respond to an urgent need for 4 no. Sixth Form Colleges. They embarked on an ambitious tendering and procurement process and Extraspace Solutions were appointed as the preferred provider of the Offsite Modular Building Solution.

Our Team

Extraspace Solutions used the resources of our professional partners in delivering this ambitious project. Hulme Upright were the lead architect on the project, SI Sealy, the M&E consultants and Roughan & O’Donovan, the structural and civil engineers. Having worked with our partners on numerous projects to date, all have intimate knowledge of our modular system and the consequential make up of our modular building solution. Our clients reap the benefit of this knowledge through vastly improved turnaround times for all aspects of design.

Our Offsite Solution

Merton Sixth Form College ExteriorAs there were 4 sites across the Merton area running concurrently the installation of this project had to be planned meticulously. It involved the delivery of 250 steel frame modules over a 10 week period to the 4 schools delivering a total of over 7,000m2. All deliveries took place at night and at weekends to ensure the daily operation of the schools was not affected. Close consultation with all neighbours and Environmental Control ensured all deliveries took place without complaint.

Once the modular buildings were delivered, the initial job at hand was to ensure that they were fully sealed and weather tight, a process which took approximately 2 weeks per school. This allowed a further 9-10 weeks for the completion of all internal finishes, mechanical and electrical services and the installation of all fixtures and fittings.

School Profile

Merton Sixth Form College InteriorAll four schools, Raynes Park, Ricards Lodge, Rutlish and Bishopsford, were of similar size of approximately 1,700m2. All four opened in time for the school term, giving the schools adequate time for their internal fit out. The fit-out of each school incorporated the following:

  • Suspended ceilings throughout
  • 50 db sound reduction between classrooms
  • Both carpet and welded vinyl floor finish
  • A VRF heating and cooling system
  • Disabled access lifts
  • Interactive Whiteboards
  • Thermowood and powder coated aluminium external finishes
  • Aluminium powder coated windows and doors
  • Brise soleil

Typically the schools are two storied, approximately 16 classrooms and incorporates specialist features such as Dance Studio’s, Science Laboratories, Art Rooms, Media Rooms, Music Rooms and Learning Resource Rooms, all of varying dimensions.

Being sixth form schools, one noticeable feature is the large common room in each school, complete with kitchen and well furnished relaxation areas.

Externally, the modular buildings are finished with a mixture of thermowood and powder coated aluminium panels. The buildings also incorporate Brise Soleil to all south facing windows and canopies to the main entrances.
