First Minister of Wales Opens New Wernick Buildings Factory

Wernick Buildings’ new factory at Kenfig Industrial Estate was opened on the 4th of June by the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones. Wernick Buildings have been producing modular and portable buildings in South Wales since 1989, when the company purchased a factory at Neath Abbey from Taylor Woodrow.

When the site at Kenfig was purchased it had been derelict for six years, and required £3million of development. This included the installation of gantries inside the factory building, refurbishment of the existing offices and installation of nearly 300 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the factory, which will generate 75kwh.

The development cost also included the first building to be manufactured at Kenfig; a new 630m2 office building placed at the front of the factory, which took only 8 weeks to manufacture and install. A larger factory means an increase in output, but also an increase in efficiency. The factory is already producing more than was possible at Neath, and once the third line becomes fully operational will be able to produce nearly twice as much. During his opening speech, Chairman David Wernick acknowledged this by announcing his aim to double the company’s turnover over the next three years.

Mr Wernick also made reference to the increased employment opportunities the factory will bring with it. He commented, “Within the first four weeks of operation at Kenfig, 8 additional jobs have already been created and it is hoped that a further 40 to 50 jobs will be created over the next few years.  Our policy of taking on new young apprentices in the factory will also continue and grow.”

This investment will create jobs, growth and wealth for the Welsh economy and that’s to be welcomed. I wish them every success in the future.”
