Requirement

Wenvoe County Council had a vision of replacing an existing library building with an attractive and modern space for community use.

Built as a temporary classroom block 60 years ago, the previous structure was impractical and beyond repair.

A grant administered by the Vale of Glamorgan Council allowed the Council to approach building providers. The Council decided on a modular solution rather than a ‘conventional build’ to ensure programme reliability and minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

Solution

Council member Dickon Oliver went online to search for modular providers, with a preference for local businesses. The Council awarded the project to Wernick following a visit to a local project and a personal recommendation.

Completion of the four module building took eight weeks, which included demolition of the old building and management of asbestos floor tiles on site.

As the area in front of the library provides access to an adjacent school, the Wernick team planned craning of the modules around school opening times. A public footpath nearby remained open for the duration of construction.

Wernick completed the building with cedar cladding, reinforced flooring to accommodate the book section and a cafeteria.

Serving as a hub for the community, the new building is helping to bring like-minded residents together. Local groups, such as parent and toddler, Welsh language and sewing take place within the library – “there is always someone to chat to, which makes all the difference to people’s mental health” commented Janet Williams, Director of the Library and Chair of Wenvoe Community Council.

Client comment

Janet added: “The building is light, spacious and clean looking – you can’t fault it.”

Dickon Oliver, Wenvoe Community Council member commented: Wernick’s project management was very professional. They were a pleasure to work with.”
