Requirement

Morton Stanley Park is a popular venue for the Redditch community and a flagship park for Redditch Borough Council. It provides an important ‘green lung’ for the area and visitors use the park for recreation, sporting activities and community events. However, it had no public facilities or source of refreshments. A new building, incorporating a café and toilets, would attract more residents to the park and allow them to enjoy the area for longer.

The Council decided on a modular building for speed of build and programme reliability – it needed to be open in time for the busy summer season. Redditch Leisure, Engineering, Legal and Facilities teams led the project, choosing civils contractor Kelbec and Wernick Buildings to deliver the modular building.

Solution

The council used the Fusion21 framework to procure the building, settling on Wernick Buildings who demonstrated excellent design capabilities. Wernick supplied a Canadian red timber clad 41m² stand-alone building, befitting the park’s green credentials and surroundings.

Bespoke features include a cantilevered roof design which provides integral shade for the building’s exterior and a bi-fold door for the main entrance. Extra fire-retardant features ensure kitchen safety and metal shutters and anti-vandal sensors protect the building against theft and malicious damage.

The café sits on previously unoccupied land, and Wernick supported the Council to overcome challenges in the final phase of the project to supply water and electrics to the building in time for the much-anticipated grand opening. Safety on site was paramount as the park stayed open during installation and completion.
