Minister visits MTX Llantrisant Health Park site and announces £121m for regional orthopaedic facility

The Welsh Government Cabinet Minister for Health and Care, Mabon ap Gwynfor, has visited the site of the new Llantrisant Health Park, a major healthcare design and build  development by MTX Contracts that will enhance access to diagnostics and planned care for communities across south-east Wales.

During the visit, the Minister reviewed progress and was able to see for himself the advanced modern methods of construction being used by MTX to create the project.   The arrival of more than 100 modules on site so far is an important milestone in the delivery of the first phase of the project.  The Minister was able to walk inside the structure created using precisely engineered steel modules manufactured offsite , which make up the building shell  for the first phase of the project due to open late in 2027.

Phase One will deliver a state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Hub, providing MRI and CT scanning, ultrasound, X-ray and endoscopy services, alongside a dedicated training centre for the future NHS workforce. 
The day before visiting the site located near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, the Minister announced £121m for Phase Two of the development which will include a regional arthroplasty surgical hub. Six new operating theatres and 54 beds will be provided at the hub initially focusing on hip and knee replacement surgery, and delivering on average 3,000 operations per year.

Led by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Llantrisant Health Park is designed to increase diagnostic capacity, support faster access to tests and treatment, and help reduce waiting times across the region.

During his visit, Mabon ap Gwynfor, Cabinet Minister for Health and Care, met project leaders and partners involved in the development.  He said: "It's been great to visit the site of the new Llantrisant Health Park and see the progress being made on what will be a truly transformative facility. The investment announced on Sunday underscores the ambition of this Government in delivering on our key priority to cut waiting times, as well as building greater long-term sustainability in the system so that waits stay down.

"Llantrisant Health Park will bring modern, purpose-built facilities to the area and help ensure people can be seen quicker for the treatment they need.  I look forward to seeing the site continue to develop and take shape over the coming months, before welcoming its first patients.

The new hub is being created on the former British Airways Avionics Engineering (BAAE) site near Cardiff, which will become the state-of-the-art healthcare campus,  MTX was originally appointed to deliver the 7,500m² Community Diagnostics Hub as Phase 1 of the development.  The entire project will see a c.17,300m² new build development across three buildings with supporting infrastructure.
