MTX completes new Urgent Treatment Centre at Clacton Hospital
Modern Methods of Construction specialist MTX Contracts Ltd has completed a £25 millionUrgent Treatment Centre at Clacton Hospital for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
The new facility includes nine consulting/examination rooms, a screening room, a mental health room, triage rooms, and an eye/plaster room. Ground and first floor walkways link the new UTC into original hospital buildings which have been refurbished by MTX. A prefabricated rooftop unit houses mechanical equipment serving the building.
A total of 51 precisely engineered and custom-designed steel structural units were factory-manufactured offsite while MTX demolished the existing Urgent Treatment Centre to make way for the two-storey extension to the hospital, and prepared the site for the next stage in the construction process.
The steel units were craned into position on site late 2025 and within weeks created a new weatherproof structure ready for the pouring of concrete floors and mechanical, electrical and plumbing fit out.
The ability to manage and deliver multiple work streams concurrently is a key element of the MTX approach to constructing high quality and fully compliant facilities for the NHS. Employing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) principles effectively shortens the time needed to deliver the project in a way that is safer, greener and more cost effective compared to traditional build processes.
The project is the latest phase in a multi-million-pound upgrade to ensure patients using Clacton Hospital receive high quality healthcare in state-of-the-art surroundings providing an improved experience in terms of both physical access to healthcare and the clinical environment.
Paul Scott, Chief Executive of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT), which runs the urgent treatment centre service at Clacton Hospital, said: “The opening of our new urgent treatment centre is a significant milestone for healthcare in Clacton. People with urgent but non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries will now be treated in a modern, purpose-built facility designed to provide faster, more efficient care.
“This investment will help to make sure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time – rather than travelling further afield or attending A&E unnecessarily.
“Alongside the new Community Diagnostic Centre and other improvements across the Clacton Hospital site, more local people can now access high-quality healthcare services closer to home, reducing unnecessary travel and supporting faster access to care when they need it most.”
