Upcoming Offsite Events: Supply Chain Sustainability School

By MPBA in Industry News

The Supply Chain Sustainability School are pleased to offer their Virtual Offsite Workshops, which are coming up this month.

All events are completely free to attend !

The workshops will offer a comprehensive new suite of learning materials to guide the construction industry in its adoption of offsite construction and further the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).

Please see the events below:

Logistics are important in any build – but especially central to the success of projects where offsite prefabrication is involved. To make sure the project runs smoothly, there are additional considerations that the delivery team will need to make.

In this workshop, we will take you through some of these key considerations, such as the geography of the site, transportation constraints, and location of the manufacturing facility. We’ll discuss carbon and cost implications of these decisions, and share case studies to highlight what can go wrong!

The Supply Chain Sustainability School’s recent ‘Whole life Carbon Guidance for Offsite Construction’ report identified nine significant opportunities for the offsite sector to drive decarbonisation. The report proposes that the ways in which materials are chosen and how designs are optimised can significantly influence whole life carbon impacts.

So where does this leave concrete? Whilst concrete might not be the default ‘green’ material choice, its characteristics make it a vital material in many construction and infrastructure projects.

In this webinar, speakers from Laing O’Rourke’s Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction (CEMC) will talk about their material research and development as well as the benefits that factory-made components can bring to your projects.

There is so much interest and press talk about Modern Methods of Construction, but mostly about volumetric modular construction. The scope of MMC extends far beyond modules and the terminologies and words we use may seem like a different world to the uninitiated. So, if you are wondering what all the fuss is about and would like to learn more about what is available then our Offsite Fundamentals Workshop is for you.

What is this session about?

The Supply Chain Sustainability School’s recent ‘Whole life Carbon Guidance for Offsite Construction’ report identified nine significant opportunities for the offsite sector to drive decarbonisation. The report proposes that the ways in which materials are chosen and how designs are optimised can significantly influence whole life carbon impacts.

In the next episode of our “Lunch ’n’ Learn” webinar series, we look into the benefits and drawbacks of concrete. On the face of it, concrete might not be an obvious material to specify if carbon reduction is your primary goal, but our guest speaker, John Handscomb from Akerlof, will describe some of the ways in which significant carbon reductions can be achieved. Whilst there’s no ‘silver bullet’ solution, there are numerous ways in which significant reductions can be achieved.

What will I achieve?

By attending this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The latest innovations in concrete specifications
  • Using different specifications to achieve the required results
  • Implementing lean thinking in concrete structures
  • How collaboration in design can benefit all stakeholders

What is this session about?

In this instalment of our webinar series dedicated to exploring the carbon implications of various building materials, we will shine a spotlight on Timber within the Commercial sector.

In the wake of the recent release of the School's "Whole Life Carbon Guidance for Offsite Construction" report, this session will feature guest speakers from the Structural Timber Association and Stora Enso. They will showcase award-winning projects and elaborate on why they chose timber as their primary building material. They will show design approaches for typical office buildings and mass timber detailing guidance to help you with your next ESG-driven project.  During their presentation, they will also delve into both the advantages and challenges they encountered, with a particular emphasis on how timber can contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

What will I achieve?

By participating in this session, you will gain valuable insights into:

  • Leveraging timber to reduce carbon emissions and wider ESG goals in your commercial projects.
  • Reviewing practical mass timber design guidance for typical office buildings.
  • Exploring real-world examples of innovative timber applications in construction projects.
  • Discovering the resources and support provided by the Supply Chain Sustainability School for practitioners involved in offsite construction.
