MTX fast tracks urgently needed office accommodation at Derriford Hospital
A brand new two-storey building has been completed in just 14 weeks to provide vital office accommodation at an infill location on site at Derriford Hospital for University Hospitals Plymouth.
MTX was already working on site delivering 2 projects and drafted in a new team to undertake the extra work for the infill project.
MTX Project director Paul Williams explains: “The new accommodation was urgently needed by the Trust to accommodate members of the facilities management team on one floor and the CEO senior management team on the second floor due to refurbishment work elsewhere in the hospital estate. Working closely with the Trust’s site team we very quickly turned around the design and procurement for the building mounted on a steel frame that allows the existing site service road to pass underneath the new structure.
“Our team worked 18 hour split shift days and 7-days a week from start to finish to complete the project amid challenging site conditions of working within a live hospital environment in just 14 weeks, and I am immensely proud of what they have achieved in such a short timescale and to the highest standards.”
The two-storey structure is mounted on a steel frame and each level provides 350m² of accommodation. Employing Modern Methods of Construction principles component parts of the new building were manufactured off-site in factory conditions before being craned into position. Concrete floors, partition walls were installed into the steel frame structure followed by mechanical and electrical fit-out and heating and ventilation installation.
