MTX chosen to design landmark diagnostics and treatment centre for South East Wales
A new landmark diagnostics and treatment centre for South East Wales located in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, is being designed by MTX Contracts Ltd to be built using modern methods of construction.
The project will transform the former British Airways Avionics Engineering (BAAE) site near Cardiff into a state-of-the-art healthcare campus, delivering a c.17,300m² new build development across three buildings with supporting infrastructure to create a Community Diagnostics Hub and Treatment Centre.
MTX has been appointed under a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) to deliver Phase 1 of the development, which focuses on the design and construction of a Community Diagnostics Hub. This first phase will cover around 7,500m² and is scheduled to begin construction later this year.
Set across three floors, the new hub will house a range of advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. The ground floor will include MRI, CT, ultrasound and plain film X-ray suites, alongside dedicated endoscopy procedure rooms, follow-up screening and clinical services. The second floor will accommodate plant rooms and a training area for staff, including an Endoscopy Academy designed to provide a high-quality regional NHS training centre for endoscopists.
External landscaping and supporting works will also form part of this phase, including improvements to existing car parking and roads, as well as compliance landscaping to the south of the site for SAB design requirements.
Pre-Construction Services Agreements enable clients to employ contractors ahead of the main construction contract, allowing early contractor involvement in the design process. MTX’s dedicated pre-construction team, which includes specialist healthcare architects, works closely with clinical teams to ensure every design maximises efficiency, functionality and patient experience.
The Welsh Government has granted official approval of funding for phase one of theLlantrisant Health Park which will support regional collaboration between Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The facility will improve access to diagnostics and treatment, enhance service delivery and provide a centre of excellence for high-volume, low-complexity orthopaedic and day/outpatient general surgery.
MTX Managing Director David explained: “We are extremely proud to be partnering with the health boards to develop this exciting new facility, which represents a major step forward for healthcare in South East Wales. Combining our healthcare expertise with Modern Methods of Construction, we are developing a design that will deliver an outstanding assetfor patients and clinicians alike.”
Paul Mears, Chief Executive of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, said: “Llantrisant Health Park represents an exciting step forward for health care services in South East Wales. By bringing together diagnostic, surgical and specialist services in one purpose-built facility, we can improve access, reduce delays and provide a better experience for patients across the region.”
Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Jeremy Miles said: "This investment in Llantrisant Health Park demonstrates our commitment to building an NHS that works for everyone in Wales. By bringing together three health boards to deliver modern diagnostic services closer to where people live, we are taking practical steps to reduce waiting times and improve patient care across South-East Wales."
