McAvoy completes new teaching block for Dagenham Park Church of England School

By McAvoy in Industry News

Dagenham Park Church of England School required a new Maths teaching block at its London site at School Road, Dagenham. Due to unforeseen circumstances and the project having a challenging deadline, The McAvoy Group stepped in to provide a modular solution that would meet the client’s requirements, on time and on budget.

The school had already accepted additional students for the next academic year, making it imperative that the scheme not run over the projected timescale. The new build was within a PFI school and as a result there were extensive contract requirements to adhere to.

In response McAvoy produced its solution within 25 weeks, from manufacture in the McAvoy factory over seven weeks to its erection on site over an 18-week period.

The building was also designed to operate on a standalone basis, but certain elements had to be linked, including security and the fire alarm system.

McAvoy had to ensure its modular solution complemented the existing school it was to be placed adjacent to, which had been constructed only a few years’ previous. To achieve this, McAvoy incorporated detailing around the windows to create depth to the façade and further employed window grilles to match the existing structure. A complementary colour scheme was also devised to create synergy between the new and the existing buildings.

McAvoy’s design had to accommodate the client’s need for natural ventilation, plus the incorporation of the heating and cooling system into the ventilation system (an air handling unit/AHU) to negate the need for radiators.

McAvoy’s early engagement with the client ensured the project ran smoothly. From the design process to completion, this two-way dialogue assisted in the delivering of a project to the client which met all their requirements, being provided with a quality teaching block delivered within the timescale and budget. As a consequence, the community benefits from additional school places in an area with high demand.
