Celebrating Women in Construction: Meet Liz Addy, Head of Procurement
At Thurston, we not only recognise the achievements of our team members, but also their role in fostering growth and confidence in others. Liz, our Head of Procurement, has been with Thurston for over 20 years. Her contribution as a mentor and role model is inspiring, and her journey has become a beacon for aspiring women in the construction and engineering fields.
From Passion to Profession:
Liz's story begins with a childhood dream rooted in the heart of the Midlands. Fascinated by the workings of a miniature JCB gifted by a family friend, she was determined to delve into the world of manufacturing and engineering. Her pursuit led her to undertake an Manufacturing Systems Engineering Degree at Leeds in 1990; she was one of the very few women on the course, standing strong amidst a cohort of 10 women and 100 men.
Trailblazing in a Male-Dominated Field:
Her first professional foray was at JCB, where Liz was the only woman on the shop floor. This experience, combined with the influence of her father, a time-served engineer, and her mother, an accountant, naturally steered her towards a career in manufacturing and procurement.
Leading and Inspiring:
At Thurston, Liz's leadership extends beyond her procurement role. She actively mentors young talent within Thurston, exemplified by her guidance of Joanne, who is studying towards a CIPs level 4 diploma in Procurement and Supply. Liz's support has been pivotal in transforming Joanne from a construction newcomer, to a confident Procurement professional.
Mentorship and Growth:
When Joanne joined Thurston, she had an interesting and varied professional background, but was inexperienced in the field of procurement. Liz saw potential in her, and knew she would be a great asset to the team, so she took on the role of her mentor. Liz was particularly proud when she witnessed Joanne’s first solo buying experience, observing her confidently negotiate with suppliers, a testament to her growing self-assurance.
Liz's mentorship is a shining example of how experienced professionals in construction and engineering can empower those entering the industry, especially women. Liz’s belief in Joanne’s potential, despite her non-traditional background, underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion in our sector.
Leading with Excellence:
Today, Liz oversees procurement for all three Thurston sites, ensuring efficiency and innovation in our processes. Over the past 20 years, her leadership and expertise have been instrumental in our continued growth, embodying the change we wish to see in the industry.
A Role Model for Women in Engineering:
Liz’s journey is a testament to the importance of diversity in construction and engineering. Her presence and achievements challenge stereotypes and pave the way for more women to follow in her footsteps.
Here’s to More Women Like Liz:
As we celebrate Liz’s contributions, we also recognize the need for more women like her in our industry. Her story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with passion, resilience, and dedication.
Join us in applauding Liz for her remarkable journey and her role in shaping a more inclusive future in construction and engineering!
