CHALLENGE:

In order to meet the Environment Agency’s 2030 Net Zero Target, Kier, the construction company responsible for the Budleigh Salterton project in East Devon, England, needed to reduce their scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions associated with the project from the beginning. Additionally, Kier sought to align with the EA South West Framework Carbon Reduction Principles, which emphasised the need to reduce carbon emissions from plant and equipment. The project team wanted to explore more fuel-efficient alternatives to traditional generators for site power, including renewable and hybrid-based power.

SOLUTION:

Kier partnered with Wernick Power Solutions to provide sustainable site power to a work compound of four cabins, including an office, canteen, and drying room. The solution comprised a solar panel array, a 30kVA battery pack, and a 60kVA generator that ran on HVO fuel as an alternative to diesel. The Wernick team helped to install the new battery storage unit technology, Voltbank, which enabled the customer to reduce costs by installing solar equipment on their site over the summer months and removing it over the winter.

RESULT:

To validate the effectiveness of the solution, data was collected in August, a month with a mix of sunny and cloudy conditions. The data indicated that the solution delivered a cost saving of £245 per month and a carbon saving of 9036 kg CO2e/month. This was in comparison to a standard generator running on its own, assuming a run time of 12 hours/day for 5 days/week, in line with current site hours.

The sustainable site power provided by Wernick Power Solutions allowed Kier to successfully reduce their scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions and align with the EA South West Framework Carbon Reduction Principles.
