Sustainability in Construction: Our Commitment - Building a Better World

By Tremco CPG UK Limited in Industry News

Offering sustainable solutions for energy-efficient constructions, opting for environmentally friendly vehicles, using recyclable packaging and more – CPG Europe works proactively to ensure that we are protecting the generation of tomorrow.

Being part of the European construction industry, a sector that alone accounts for approximately 38% of Europe's annual CO2-emissions, and within an industry that is reported to be responsible for 35% of Europe’s total waste generation, taking big steps to be more sustainable is one of our core values.

What sustainability means to us as a company within the construction industry

As a responsible company, CPG Europe is committed to sustainable development – it makes up one of our key values. To us, being sustainable covers three key pillars.

Environmental sustainability

Arguably the most well-known pillar, environmental sustainability places emphasis on how businesses can achieve positive economic outcomes without doing any harm, in the short- or long-term, to the environment.

Economic sustainability

Achieving economic growth without engaging in harmful environmental trade-offs. This includes offering sustainable solutions for energy efficient constructions that promote less waste such as modular systems prepared with precision off-site, as well as operating with environmentally friendly vehicles. Examples of this is choosing hybrid and electrical options for company cars across Europe and utilising logistics companies that optimise routes for product and material deliveries.

Social sustainability

To us, this is about identifying and managing positive and negative business impacts on our people. This covers not only CPG Europe employees, but all our stakeholders and customers.

To ensure that we are meeting our sustainability targets and living our ‘sustainable development’ value, we began our journey with the third party sustainability assessment body, EcoVadis, in 2021.

EcoVadis: provider of holistic sustainability ratings

At CPG Europe, one of our steps to becoming more sustainable is to regularly calculate just how sustainable our practices are and therefore see the areas that present further opportunities for us. This is where EcoVadis comes in.

With a global network of more than 100,000 rated companies, EcoVadis has grown to become the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings.

Our report

We are currently in a phase of submitting our sustainable practices for our 2023 assessment. Our current practices include much of the information that you will find on our website, such as utilising motion sensors for our lighting, energy efficient motors in production machinery and water treatment plants, for example. Whilst these are a standard practice for us, they also help us to be more energy efficient and less wasteful.

We look forward to sharing our latest results soon.

Our short-term opportunities

As our customers require more sustainable products and practices, we too have the opportunity to adjust and amend the products and services that we offer. From sourcing more recycled packaging to our R&D departments introducing new, environmentally friendly products and systems, becoming more sustainable and efficient touches all areas of our business.

What are Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions?

Scope 1 emissions are a measurement of the emissions from fuel we consume onsite in our company facilities and Scope 2 are a measurement of the electricity, steam, heating or cooling we purchase from utility companies.

Scope 1, or direct, emissions come from fuel combustion, such as burning natural gas for our boilers and furnaces and from company-owned vehicles (trucks, vehicles, forklifts, etc). Scope 1 emissions are released into the atmosphere as a direct result of our activities.

Scope 2 are emissions we cause indirectly when we purchase electricity, such as when a plant uses electricity purchased from a nearby power plant to power its production line.
