Shaping the Future of Apprenticeships in Modular Construction

As part of its forward planning for 2026 and beyond, the MPBA has been working closely with the CITB National Construction College (NCC) to revive and progress a long-awaited apprenticeship designed specifically for the modular and portable building sector.

The Construction Assembly and Installation Operative Apprenticeship, originally approved in 2019, was developed to provide a practical route into the industry for operatives involved in post-manufacturing refurbishment, maintenance, installation, and dismantling of buildings. Until now, the absence of a suitable training provider and end-point assessment organisation meant the scheme was never deployed.

That position is now changing. Discussions with the NCC have reached the employer gateway stage, where direct engagement with employers is essential to finalise the business case and move the apprenticeship towards delivery.

To support this, the MPBA is hosting a workshop with CITB on 22 January at Oulton Hall, Leeds, bringing together members to help shape the future of this apprenticeship and demonstrate industry demand. A strong turnout from full members will be critical to ensuring the scheme moves forward, with a potential launch planned for later in 2026.
