A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme Offices Delivered without Delay!

The A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme is a £1.5 bn project to upgrade 21 miles of road between Cambridge and Huntingdon. The A14 Independent Delivery Team (IDT), a joint venture formed by Skanska, Costain, Balfour Beatty and Carillion is working on behalf of Highways England to deliver the scheme, which includes upgrading the existing A14 between Ellington, west of Huntingdon, the Milton junction on the Cambridge Northern Bypass and widening of the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury. A scheme of this scale requires a vast workforce, in multiple compounds, as well as on-sites along the A14 itself.

Wernick was selected to provide the accommodation facilities in two of the project’s offices after a competitive tender process. We worked closely with the A14 IDT to provide the most cost-effective build process and to meet the desired timeline for the project.

The buildings were constructed by Wernick Buildings, at their specialist factory in South Wales. The building designs were optimised by the Wernick team to maximise the amount of work that could be undertaken offsite, reducing both the time and cost of the project.

The completed buildings were installed in two compounds, Brampton and Swavesey, with 62 and 66 bay office blocks being provided to each respectively. Finished with a low maintenance plastisol exterior, the offices provided a combination of open plan office and break spaces, partitioned meeting rooms and toilet facilities. Suspended ceilings were supplied in the meeting rooms and reception area to add a high quality finish, and a corporate colour scheme was used throughout in the interior.

This had to be delivered to a very tight timeline and in the most cost-efficient manner possible. Thanks to the huge efforts of the manufacturing team which worked shifts round the clock to ensure success, we managed to supply exactly what the client wanted within the timeline requested.”
