PMflex System Chosen for Crossrail Project

By Wernick Hire Ltd in Industry News

Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project, with over 10,000 people working across over 40 construction sites. As one of the largest hirers of construction site accommodation in the UK, Wernick Hire have provided products for a variety of Crossrail project.

The latest of these comes from joint venture ATC, made up of Alstom, TSO and Costain, and their site at Marble Arch in London. For an important project in such a prestigious location, ATC chose Wernick Hire’s high quality PMflex modular system for their site accommodation.

One feature of PMflex is how easy it is to install, which came in handy for the building’s specific location. “It was going to be situated on a roundabout,” explains Sarah Jones, Major Project Manager with Wernick. Closing a busy roundabout in central London during the day was out of the question, so the team had to work at night. “We had a window between 10pm to 4am when we could work, which included the time rigging and de-rigging the 100 tonne crane!”

Working in this way the units were installed over three nights. If the schedule wasn’t challenging enough, the rigorous standards demanded by Crossrail added another layer of complexity to the project. One example of this is that security checks needed to be performed on all vehicles entering the site.

The building itself is made up of 17 units, in an 8-on-9 configuration that leaves space on top of one unit for a viewing deck. The ground floor of the building is for site operatives, featuring a canteen area, shower and toilet facilities and a first aid room. The upper floor, accessed by external staircases, features a large open plan office, meeting rooms, toilets, storage and a kitchen.
