Pioneering mental health bedroom returns for second year running

By Darwin Group in Industry News

A pioneering modular mental health bedroom built by Darwin Group is returning to the Design in Mental Health Conference for a second year running.

Bedroom Evolved drew in the crowds at last year’s conference when it was launched.

Created by leading offsite healthcare construction firm Darwin Group, in collaboration with Safehinge Primera and Tough Furniture, it set a new bar for acceptable standards in mental health bedroom design.

This year, the team behind the bedroom has made several improvements based on visitor feedback, including changes to the furniture, lighting, flooring and colour palette.

The idea for the original project came from the recognition that the NHS not only needs a high-quality, cost-effective solution that can be deployed at speed whilst also providing a calming, serene place to improve people’s chances of responding successfully to treatment.

With an overall area of 32.19m2, the bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom, has anti-ligature fixtures and fittings, as well as an innovative anti-barricade, anti-ligature door. It builds on the tried and tested space standards of repeatable rooms, incorporating the latest advances in mental health design.

Darwin Group Principal Architect Louis Sullivan, who was part of the team that created Bedroom Evolved, will also be speaking at the event at 3pm, on June 4, to discuss lessons learned from the project.

Bedroom Evolved can be seen on Stand 214.
