Wernick Events Provide Fast Delivery for International Rugby 7s Championship

This summer, Swansea University and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) hosted the first World University Rugby Sevens Championship to be held on UK soil. The competition hosted 19 teams from across the world, 10 male and 9 female, for 3 full days of rugby and a comprehensive cultural programme.

With Wales being a nation of Rugby fans and with a Schools day planned that would bring over 300 pupils and teachers to the event, the organisers were expecting large crowds, and needed plenty of seating to accommodate everyone.

Wernick provided a 1000 seat grandstand with accessible ramp for the audience watching live, and a camera tower for those recording the matches for fans back home. “Wernick offered a very competitive price.” Commercial Projects Officer Gez Watt told us. “Of the three quotes we received, theirs was the best.”

Installing the tiered seating presented the Events Team with a challenge. The grandstand needed to be installed on a running track, but without too much stress or pressure being applied to the track’s surface. In order to achieve thick rubber matting was used to protect the ground underneath the stands. Large sole boards were also used to evenly distribute the weight of the grandstand. When delivering and dismantling the kit, forklift trucks had to be kept away from the delicate track surface, so all materials were dropped on a concrete outskirt nearby, and moved manually into position by the installation team.

Mr Watt was very impressed with the work of the Events Team; “They were very good when installing the seating and mindful of the restrictions we needed to have in place. At the end of the tournament they were able to decommission all of the structures in one day which was fantastic.”
