Portakabin volunteers renovate the Glen in biggest community challenge yet
As part of the York Cares Big Community Challenge, volunteers from Portakabin renovated and redecorated the interior of the Glen respite centre which offers short breaks for children with disabilities.
Volunteers from businesses across the City got involved in York Cares’ biggest project to date, where a total of four sites across York were transformed.
A team of 25 volunteers from Portakabin joined the four-day volunteer event to renovate and redecorate the Glen respite centre which is located on Ousecliffe Gardens in Clifton.
The Glen offers children with disabilities short breaks away from home. A stay at the Glen provides children the opportunity to take part in family and community-based activities, to make new friends and to broaden their horizons. With breaks from a few hours to a few days a month, the Glen offers a safe environment for children to enjoy new and positive experiences.
The team worked up a total of 150 volunteering hours by painting children’s bedrooms, the dining room, guest toilet and corridor. They will also return to the centre during a less busy period to replace bedroom carpets with vinyl flooring and hang photographs.
Local businesses assisted in the redecoration project by donating supplies. Aquatec Paint provided more than 250 litres of paint for the walls and ceilings while Phoenix Flooring and Arnold Lavers supplied flooring and plywood respectively for the new floors. Andrew Signs provided printed photographs and Portakabin supplied photo frames and lampshades to decorate the newly renovated rooms.
Nicola Inglis, Team Leader at the Glen said, “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the wonderful people who have come and volunteered their time at the Glen. Everyone on the team was very respectful and professional; their work has made a huge difference.
“The Portakabin team probably cannot appreciate the impact that they have had and how giving six hours each of their time has enhanced the living environment of the children we support. We could not have wished for a better team to be involved with us and feel very lucky that the team chose the Glen for their project.”
