SGS Wise Gatehouse
PROJECT BRIEF
South Gloucester and Stroud College selected Elite to provide a new gatehouse for its ‘WISE’ campus – the West of England Institute of Specialist Education – with a requirement for a modern, welcoming façade for the state-of-the-art vocational centre for sports and the arts.
OUR APPROACH
After receiving the initial enquiry via our website, we jumped at the opportunity to create this unique building. Thanks to its speed and flexibility, modular construction is ideal for producing gatehouses of this type, but our bespoke approach meant that we could work with SGS to create something unique.
The six metre square building was to be constructed in our factory in two sections before being transported to site to be finished and installed. The brief called for an unusual configuration, with integrated supports for the timber canopy which appears to ‘float’ above the structure.
What’s more, the full-height glazing that wraps two sides of the gatehouse allows plenty of natural light into the administrative space inside, combining perfectly with the Siberian Larch cladding and aluminium panels to create a high-end aesthetic for the building.
The building is kept warm via an air source heat pump, which offers a lower carbon impact than a traditional boiler, helping to future-proof the building.
THE RESULTS
The new SGS WISE gatehouse is proof that modular buildings can be anything but standard, acting as a warm and modern welcome for visitors to the campus thanks to its striking floating roof structure and effective use of glazing and natural cladding materials.
