Ashby & Croft are Specialists in Bespoke Buildings

Thurrock Council have commissioned Ashby & Croft to provide a specialist school building for Quarry Hill Academy on Bradleigh Avenue in Grays, Essex.
Quarry Hill Academy aim to tailor education to meet individual needs, interest and aptitude, so as to fulfil every child?s potential through classes from Nursery to Year 6. The Academy recognises the unique knowledge base and skill set of every child and as a result carries out diverse teaching strategies to cater for varying needs.
With over 500 pupils and growing at the Outstanding Ofsted rated school, it was evident that to support these diverse learning capabilities, Quarry Hill Academy required an inclusion centre for students facing mainstream schooling difficulties.
Rather than fully remove challenged students from the school it is proven that to maximise achievement and re-engagement, a structured and supportive learning classroom environment would enable potential return to mainstream schooling.
Ashby & Croft were able to provide a personalised solution to Thurrock Council that included planning permission, building control sign off, full ground works package, fully powered, with connected services, IT installation and HSE compliance.
The building designed by Ashby & Croft’s inhouse architectural team mimicked the main building with a reception, staff room, classroom, amenities and adapted inclusion rooms. These inclusion units enable students to take a time out from the classroom environment to calm down and self-reflect during stressful periods, safeguarding themselves as well as other students from disruptive behaviour.
Ashby & Croft worked closely with Quarry Hill staff to understand the need to provide special education students with the least restrictive environment to replicate mainstream learning areas. The walls within the centre are tailored to be extremely durable with high density internal boarding to withstand their bespoke requirements. Quarry Hill existing classes also face minimal disruptions as the centre will be manufactured and fitted offsite before a short installation period.
